Photo album from North America is HERE
CANADA: (1979)
Montreal:
Old town in Montreal is very pleasant.
MEXICO :
(Northern Mexico only - most of my Mexico info is on Central America page ):
Tijuana: (1990)
What to do:
Shop! You can find bargains here. Apart from this it's not a very pleasant city
Getting there and away:
Parking on the US side and walking across the border is preferable as most car insurances aren't valid when crossing over to Mexico, and the driving in Tijuana is notorious....
USA: (1967, 1979, 1987, 1988, 1989-1990, 1992, 1994)
Los Angeles: (1979, 1987, 1988, 1989-90, 1994)
Where to stay:
If you're on a budget and after some fun, the Banana Bungalows in Hollywood (close to Hollywood Bowl) is your best option. They have cheap dorm rooms, they have parties almost every night with real cheap drinks, they arrange trips to the beach, to nightclubs, to sights and amusement parks.
What to do:
A tour of Beverly Hills/Bel Air with a star map can be fun if you're into big fences and the occasional glimpse of a big mansion (you may even see a star driving out). The Chinese Theater with foot and hand prints of some old stars, the walk of fame along Hollywood Boulevard, and star spotting outside China Club on Monday nights or on Rodeo Drive in day time, is all part of the Hollywood scene that is fun for those who get a kick out of the glitter of Hollywood.
I have to recommend a classical concert in Hollywood Bowl. It's quite cheap for the back seats (as low as US$ 1) and the season is all summer...
The amusement parks Disneyland , Universal Studios , and Magic Mountain are all in and around LA.
Visit also Venice Beach for the fun beach scene and Santa Monica if you you just want the beach.
There are plenty of great restaurants in LA and the night clubs are also varied as should be in a big city like LA.
Getting there and away:
I recommend renting a car as most places you'll want to go will give you little freedom without it.
Bryce Canyon: (1990)

Not as huge and impressive as Grand Canyon, but more beautiful and characteristic with its crooked reddish pillars.
Durant, Oklahoma: (1988, 1992, 1994)
What to do:
Go fishing for catfish with stink bait, quite an experience (don't let them fool you to eat the "stink bait on a cracker" - it's made of rotted cow brain, blood and cheddar cheese...!)
Ft. Lauderdale: (1994)
I found Ft Lauderdale a tourist ghetto and headed down to Miami Beach very quickly.
Grand Canyon: (1979, 1990)
What to do:
Walk down and make sure you bring plenty of drinks (keep the bottles for the water stations on the real hard climb back up again) and some food. It's just as magnificent as you imagined it would be!
Las Vegas: (1987, 1990)
Where to stay:
The Stardust had doubles for US 30,- including the Lido Show when I was there (1990) but most likely those prices were due to the construction going on and waking you up at 0700 .... Check the big newspapers (also in LA) and look out for bargains. Tam O'Shanter is one of the cheaper Motels.
What to do:
Gamble of course! Check also out one or two of the great shows. They're worth it!
Memphis: (1992)
What to do:
Graceland!!!!! It's fun to see how tacky the style was back in the seventies. The King was still the king!
There are also some good blues joints in town (Beale Street) and BB.King has his own club here. Memphis is music more than anything.
Miami: (1994)
Where to stay:
There's one great hotel in Miami Beach that I don't remember the name of. It's used in every movie or TV series that has a scene from Miami and is a great backpacker hang out. You can't miss it....
What to do:
Miami Beach is fun and very special with its Art Deco beach front and latin atmosphere in the rest of the city. There is a big crowded beach but it's after sunset that Miami Beach seems to come to life.
New Orleans: (1992)
What to do:
A boat trip (on one of the wheel boats of course) to one of the old historical mansions is a must. Walking around in the French Quarter is also nice and there are lots of good restaurants with Creole cooking on the menu. In the night there are jazz and blues concerts everywhere. An excursion to the swamps with a boat ride to catch the glimpse of some wildlife and the occasional alligator is also well worth the effort.
New York: (1979, 1987, 1992)
What to do:
Try out a small music hot spot in Greenwich Village (Bleecker street). Take a stroll in Central Park . Enjoy!
San Diego: (1990)
What to do:
Sea World - visit Shamu and see spectacular dolphin shows
San Francisco: (1979)
What to do:
Chinatown , Alcatraz, Fisherman's Wharf, taking the trams for a ride, driving down "the crookedest street".......
Hawaii: (1988, 1990, 1994)
Where to stay:
The Seaside Hostel in Waikiki is fun and nice at US$ 10,- (1994).
What to do:
Rent a car and drive around the island. Stop at Hanauma bay for great snorkeling. Climb the Diamond Hill and check out the surfing on the north coast of Oahu .
Try also the other islands.
Maui is beautiful and the drive on the south coast is very scenic. Kaanapali Beach is dazzling and the Haleakal crater is awesome.
The Big Island is spectacular. Do rent a four wheel drive and head for the top of Mauna Kea (over 4000 meters). The views are incredible and the scenery on the way there is awesome. Chill on the beaches at Kona and the black sand beaches further south. Take also a trip across the island.
